HOST LEADERSHIP
GATHERING, SYDNEY

RECORDINGS - 17th September 2024 - St Andrew's Cathedral School

EXPLORE I ENGAGE I EMBARK

In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, the traditional "heroic" model of leadership is becoming increasingly outdated. Leaders who position themselves as the decision-maker can inadvertently stifle team creativity and collaboration. Instead, the concept of "Host leadership," as proposed by Mark McKergow and Helen Bailey, offers a transformative approach that emphasises engagement, empowerment, and shared responsibility. Host leadership shifts the focus from individual heroics to collective success.

We invite you to:

  • EXPLORE Host Leadership.  The Metaphor. The Model. The Tools.
  • ENGAGE with Leaders who use the approach.
  • EMBARK on the path of Host Leadership & step into a world where leadership becomes participative, Engaging and above all Human.

Andy Shone & Daniel HummerdalHosting Safety 2.00 – 2.45 pm              In industries where compliance is paramount, the concept of leaders as hosts challenges traditional views. Drawing on our experiences of working in high-risk sectors like mining and aviation, this presentation will explore how organisations can move beyond best practice and simplistic behavioural constraints, and instead embrace the complexities of work and the untapped human potential of their employees. We'll discuss the challenges and benefits of this approach, offering insights into how leaders can use hosting practices as a way to improve performance.

Pina Fanggidae & Jason Pascoe – Hosting Principal Performance Appraisals and The Users Guide to the Future   2.50 - 3.35 pm

Part 1: How to make performance appraisals more authentic and valued as a growth and learning experience for educational leaders.                        Have you ever heard of educators being hosts and curators of their performance appraisals? Join us to hear about how educational leaders applied the metaphor of host through a solution-focused gallery walk. We invite you to consider how this innovative approach could be used in your context.

Part 2: Have you ever looked at a plan you have written and thought, “I wish I knew then what I know now.” Whilst planning is essential, plans go out of date rapidly as the world changes around them.                                        The User’s Guide to the Future emphasises both the distant future and the near future to set direction and build progress. Building on Pina’s presentation, you will have the opportunity to use the User’s Guide to the Future for a current work challenge.
